Klondike Derby 2011

posted Mar 1, 2011, 8:05 PM by Troop 121

1/14-15/11

Troop 121 made a fine showing at the annual Johnny Appleseed Trail District Klondike Derby this past weekend.  Our two patrols participated with 16 other patrols from other troops in demonstrating their Scouting skills in 11 different events including: fire building, stretcher carry, orienteering, and log saw. Our troop received

  • 3rd place overall winner
  • 1st place in orienteering
  • 2nd place in Ice carving
  • 3rd place in lashing

Congratulations to our Scouts on a job well done!!!  And our campsite had the biggest fire Friday night.

FYI - Just before the turn of the last century, gold prospectors traveled the sub-zero reaches of Alaska by means of dogs and sleds. They camped out in all kinds of winter weather, and therefore needed adequate survival skills, which they learned from the native Eskimos. Scouting has incorporated this theme in the Klondike Derby---where Scouts put their Scouting skills to work in the field, demonstrating teamwork, Scout spirit, and have fun outdoors on winter days.
