Nine boys and three adults braved the wilderness of the Pleasant Valley to prepare for our backpacking adventure to Philmont Scout Ranch.  With a route planned by our Hikemaster Dr. John Weilbacker, the boys wound their way through the woods to get a grasp of what backpacking with your entire camp on your shoulders felt like.  They packed tents, cookware, water, food as well as their own personal gear.  They enjoyed two protein and calorie packed meals in the form of MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) that gave them plenty of energy to finish the hike and even until they were at home ready for bed.  They worked on essential skills like backing, setting up tents, gas stoves, bear bag set up, backpack inspection, backpack adjustment and proper use, setting up camp, taking down camp, leave no trace, and procedures after we leave the camp.  It was a great learning experience for all.
